 GAH Interactive Game #1
« Thread Started on Nov 26, 2006, 9:45am »

Ralph Hinkley was tired. Too tired for a man his age. It didn't seem right. He looked across the room at his fiance, Pam Davidson. His wordless expression screamed "Help!"

"Aw, honey, I know it's been a hard day," Pam added, as she crossed over to the couch with two cups of hot tea in her hands. She handed one to Ralph, and sat on the edge of the couch beside him.

"Has Bill been running you ragged, again?"

"Yeah honey," he said, sipping the camomile tea.

"You want honey in that?"

"No... you... honey..." He sighed. "Nevermind..." He offered a weak smile. Pam smiled back.

"You know, the suit gives me the power to lift things, run fast as a train, fly... and it all seems so effortless. But really, it takes a lot of energy!"

"I know, Ralph." Pam responded. "What was it this time, Ralph? Bank robbers? Drug runners? Russian spies?"

Ralph looked at his fiance, with a look that simply said "You are not going to believe this one."

"No Pam. It was monkeys..."

Double Drabble at 200 words (not even intentional)!

*********

"Monkeys?" Pam exclaimed with a laugh.

"Monkeys, as far as the eye could see. At least to ME it was that bad. Only Bill can tell you what HE was doing all this time."

"Should I ask?"

"Well, Bill had one of those 'must-do-or-die' scenarios. He'd received a tip from an informant that some bank robbers out of Arizona were holed up at the zoo of all places. As he put it, 'Easy as pie, Ralph, holograph off this, we go in and bag 'em.' He had something that one of them had touched, when he was in 'the joint' before, as Bill put it."

"So? Sounds pretty cut-and-dried. Did the holograph work?"

"Sure, it worked. It showed us where they were: in a storage shed, right outside the monkey exhibit. It was soon after that that all hell broke loose," Ralph said, leaning back on the couch, eyes closed as he replayed the crazy afternoon over in his head.

"I think you're getting ahead of yourself, Ralph. Tell me the sequence, this has GOT to be one for the record books!"

"Okay, this is how my day started, after Bill came and got me and the suit...." Ralph began.

EARLIER:

"Show me the monkey."

"What?" Ralph looked at his partner, FBI agent Bill Maxwell, as he broke the holograph he was getting in the vanity mirror in Bill's issue car.

"Come on, Ralph. Take your shirt off and show me."

Ralph laughed uneasily, though he knew what his partner really wanted. Sometimes when Bill put his hand on his superhero friend's shoulder, he could see the same thing Ralph could see: holographic visions of people or places from the "vibes" left on things they come into contact with.

"Too late, Bill. It's gone. But there was at least one monkey in the cage I saw, so that's where we'll find the shed."

As Ralph spoke, Bill opened the tourist map of the L.A. Zoo, behind which they had stopped a short time ago to pinpoint the Arizona robbers location.

"OK, this will work, kid. The monkey exhibit is right on the other end of this access road we're on. Just hop over this fence and talk me in."

Ralph looked at the 20-foot-high fence. "Yeah, right. Three steps and a hop. No problem," he said sarcastically.

Bill grumbled, "We gotta get a move on, Ralph. You said so yourself: they're packing up. Would you rather wait and bag 'em out in the open, or inside the closed zoo? No one's around until the renovation starts up again tomorrow. It's now or never, kid, so time to hit the silk."

Ralph had already opened the car door and finished removing his street clothes, exposing the red "magic jammies" given to him by aliens a couple of years ago. As he tossed his pants back in and closed the door, Bill started up the car.

"I'll go in slow, in case they can hear the car over the monkeys. Talk me in, kid." He waved the miniature communicator at Ralph as he pulled away.

Ralph shook his head at his partner, then stepped back to give himself some takeoff room. He took three running steps and pushed off the unpaved road, aiming for the treetops above the tall fence.

As the red superhero cleared the top of the barbed-wire, he saw the trees were actually a bit farther from the fence then he first thought, so he simply reversed his angle to head for the ground on the other side.

Ralph's screaming could be heard over the other animal sounds when he saw what he was about to land in...

"Ralph, you there?" said Bill as he tried to reach the kid on the communicator. Receiving no response... Bill started worrying. "Great, you're out like a light and..."

"Horse manure."

While Bill was glad that Ralph wasn't hurt, he did a double take at the comment. "What?"

"You heard me Bill, I said horse manure... well probably some other animal. Just landed in it. Someone mucked out the cages and put the stuff next to the garbage can."

Bill made a face. "Great, the Counselor's going to love you for that when ya get home," he said. "Now, any sign of the exhibit or the bad guys?"

"Not yet," said Ralph as he started walking around the road, trying to find the exhibit. After about 300 yards, he found the shed the men were in. A holograph phased into view. "Bill... I got the shed, and they're still inside. You want me to go in and get them?"

"Not yet, wait for me to arrive," said Bill. "I'm going to create a diversion and you can go bust the bad guys."

Ralph rolled his eyes. "How? Trashing another government issued car?" There was a pause on the other side. "Bill, don't tell me that was the idea."

"Uh... no... Ralph, I'll be there in a sec," said Bill.

Ralph groaned and turning invisible, walked over to where he could get closer to the shed but still hide. When he tripped over something, Ralph paused when he saw someone open the door, apparently wondering where the noises were coming from. Finding only the monkeys and lemurs strolling around on their daily business, the man closed the door.

When Ralph saw Bill, he popped back visible sighing. Bill, however jumped. "Geesh, Ralph wouldja quit doin' that?"

"Sorry Bill, you should be used to it," said Ralph.

"Well... nevermind. Kid, go bust those creeps so we can celebrate," said Bill.

Ralph nodded and headed toward the door. He took a deep breath and kicked the door down, stunning the group. One, breaking out of his reprieve, drew his gun and shot at the oddly dressed man. Ralph put his arms up and deflected the bullet. Little did he know that where the deflected bullet hit was going to cause problems for everyone.

The bullet ricocheted off Ralph’s chest, then headed straight for a large crate. Suddenly, and with a loud and angry roar, the crate began to shake and wobble. Ralph turned around to see what he had hit; it was a large crate with lots of holes on the side.

“That’s strange,” Ralph thought. “There was only one bullet.”

Another loud roar came from inside the crate.

“That’s not good....” he thought again, only to realize that while he was distracted, the bad guys were escaping.

Another, although distinctly different roar came from the crate. This one was clearly a sound of an animal in pain. Ralph looked back and forth at the door and the fleeing robbers, and the large shaking crate, which had suddenly stopped it’s rocking.

*Thud*

“Oh, no!” Ralph thought. “I hit something. Something inside.” He grabbed his communicator again.

“Bill! Bill! The robbers are getting away.”

“Well, then grab them, kid!”

“I’m sorry Bill. I have to...”

“You have to nothin!! Go get ‘em!”

"Sorry, Bill. This time you're on your own..."

Ralph, walked around the crate to the front. On the side was printed, in bold red letters:

WARNING.
LIVE ANIMALS.

MALE SILVERBACK.

“Oh my god,” Ralph thought. “I’ve killed a gorilla.”

"Bill. The silverback's been shot!"

"The what!???" Bill asked, in disbelief. "Where are the robbers?"

"Sorry buddy. Change in scenario." He stuffed the communicator back in his sleeve, and ignored the next few off-colored words that came out.

Leaving the robbers for Bill, Ralph tore off a side of the crate. Inside was a cage, with strong steel bars. On the floor was a 400 pound silverback gorilla, lying in a pool of flowing blood.

Ralph shuddered at the sight. Then he concentrated, as he looked into the dying animal’s eyes.

“Don’t worry, big fella. I’ll get you outta here.”

His hand, almost humanlike, began to reach out to Ralph, approaching the bars. Typically the silverback would be more aggressive when wounded. In his state, however, knowing it was about to die, the animal reached out, as if it completely understood.

As the gorilla reached out for Ralph, a small vial fell out of his grip, and rolled on the floor.

Ralph picked up the mysterious vial. It was marked "Vial #23." Confused, Ralph stuffed it in his sleeve next to his communicator, and grabbed the bars. With almost no effort, he bent the bars open wide, and entered the cage with the gorilla. Although he was heavier than any one he had ever thrown over his shoulders, with the suit, Ralph was able to pick the animal up with ease.

“Ok. I’ve heard of flying monkeys... but a flying ape? This is ridiculous...”

With three steps, Ralph took off, and brought the animal just a few thousand yards over to a large building.

“Excuse me! Excuse me!” He began to yell at a keeper standing near a door. “I need an emergency doctor! This gorilla has been shot!”

The worker looked at the sight of a man in funny longjohns and a cape carrying a 400 pound gorilla and was too shocked for words.

Ralph frowned when he saw the man's eyes flutter slightly. "Now listen, don't you faint on me here. If you must know... I'm running on pure adrenaline here keeping this gorilla on my shoulders," he said, keeping the true reason a secret. "He's seriously hurt and needs help. Some bad guys shot him."

The keeper, snapping out of his trance nodded and had Ralph enter the building. "Here, put him on this table. I'll go get our vet," said the keeper as he ran toward the phone.

Ralph looked at the gorilla and frowned. Even though he wasn't a vet, he could tell the gorilla was barely conscious and the wound was still bleeding out. He could only guess that if the vet didn't arrive soon, the gorilla was going to lose too much blood to live. "I'm sorry fella," he said softly.

The gorilla, seeming to know, again reached his hand toward Ralph. Not knowing what to do, but sure the suit would help him if the gorilla harmed him, Ralph put his hand in the gorilla's. *Do not blame yourself, as it was not you who shot the weapon* Ralph heard in his head.

Shocked, Ralph looked in the gorilla's eyes and noticed that he was looking straight at Ralph. It wasn't a look of agression, it was a look of understanding. "What if you die? It'll be my fault," Ralph asked softly.

The gorilla didn't speak, but instead Ralph got a holograph. It was strong, but after about a minute, the holograph abruptly vanished.

Blinking, Ralph turned and noticed the vet removing a syringe from the gorilla's arm and checking his vitals. "He's under, we'd better hurry. I'm sorry sir, but you need to move on," said the vet, who looked at Ralph levelly. She was surprised at what the keeper said was right, but was glad that Ralph helped the gorilla.

"Can I wait?" said Ralph, wanting to see if he could get another holograph off the gorilla.

"No, we need to operate right now. We haven't done this yet, as you just helped bring the gorilla to where he could be treated, but please leave or we'll have to call security."

Ralph, realizing he probably couldn't get anymore holographs while the gorilla was anesthetized, nodded and left. Once outside, he began to think about what little he did see. Pulling out the vial, he looked at it again and wondered what was so important about it.
